characterstics of zener diode:-

i)it works in reverse biased condition.

ii)when large amount of current is flowing across then it undergoes in the breakdown condition.

A zener diode is placed parallely across the load.when there is a overflow of current or voltage ,then the zener diode absorbs all the current and goes to breakdown state.the breakdown is called alvanche breakdown.due to this the following device protects itself from any kind of damage.
