Answer:

Ethylene can be chemically made by ethanol dehydration; however, further purification from the dehydration products is needed. We previously reported that the ethylene gas can be easily prepared by decomposing ethephon in a buffered condition and the resulting ethylene can be used directly.

Aim :

  • To prepare Ethylene gas in laboratory.

Apparatus Required :

  • Round bottomed flask, Stand, beehive-shelf, jar, ethyl alcohol, concentrated sulphuric acid, water, bunsen burner, thistle funnel and delivery tubes.

Principle :

  • Ethyl alcohol on dehydration liberates Ethylene gas.

Procedure :

  • Set the apparatus as shown in the figure. Take ethyl alcohol in a round bottomed flask and add Concentrated sulphuric acid through a thistle funnel. Heat the mixture to 180° C.
  • Pàss the liberated ethylene gas through sodium hydroxide to remove carbon dioxide and sulphuric dioxide. Then collect the dry ethylene gas in the beehive-shell by the downward displacement of water.

\boxed{\sf CH_3CH_2OH \xrightarrow{180^{\circ}C} CH_2=CH_2+H_2O}

Result :

  • Ethylene gas is prepared.
