EXPERIMENT TO DETERMINE RADIUS OF EARTH
(USING 10th STD TRIGNOMETRY)
TO BE CONDUCTED ON ZERO SHADOW DAY
Materials required : Ruler, Pencil,
Method: Eratostenes, a Mathematician at Alexandria performed this experiment during 250BC .
• Let us assume a student at GULBARGA is performing this experiment.
• Find out the date of Zero shadow day for a place say Bangalore (not your Town). It is 18th
August. Identify distance of your place from Bangalore.(GULBARGA-BANGALORE – 600
Km)
• Select a flat surface in your school/house/terrace.
• Fix the Ruler vertically. Measure the length of the ruler. Let it be 15cm.
• At 12 noon on ZERO SHADOW DAY (at Bangalore), measure the length of the shadow of the
ruler (in GULBARGA). Let it be 1.5cm.
• Angle made by SUNs rays with the ruler at your place is
