Experiment to show the reaction of metal carbonate on acid, material required
- Material required for the reaction- test tube, sodium carbonate, lime water, dilute hydrochloride, funnel, test tube stand, dilute hydrochloride acid
- steps of procedure- take sodium carbonate in a test tube and mark A
- take some sodium hydrogen carbonate in another test tube and mark B
- Add some acid to both test tube
- cork the test tube and pass the evolved gas one by one through-line water
- Reaction and Observation - NaHCO₃+HCl ⇒ NaCl +CO₂+H₂O
- Na₂CO₃+2HCl⇒2NaCl+CO₂+H₂O
- when evolved gas passed through lime water, it turned milky
- ca(OH)₂ is lime water
- Ca(OH)₂+CO₂⇒ CaCO₃
- hence when acid is passed through sodium carbonate and sodium hydrogen carbonate it leads to the formation of carbondioxide when this carbondioxide is passed through lime water it turned milky due to the formation of calcium carbonate.
