Answer

Lowland sheep were reared at Easton College, near Norwich, United Kingdom as part of the normal commercial activities of the farm. Highland sheep were reared at Carlcroft, a College farm in Northumberland, United Kingdom.
For both lowland and highland programmes, the pastures used during the study received no inputs of fertilisers or other agrochemicals during the five years prior to the start of the rearing programme. The pastures were in rural areas with no history of industrial use. Highland ewes were lambed outdoors and therefore had no contact with bedding or buildings. The lowland ewes were kept indoors in a lambing shed of conventional design for a period of two months before the commencement of lambing. No instances of ill health amongst the ewes or lambs were recorded in either programme.
