A sound wave is a wave of compression and rarefaction, by which sound is generated in an elastic medium such as air. It is said that sound travels through air in form of longitudinal waves.
Longitudinal waves are waves in which the motion of the individual particles of the medium is parallel to the direction of energy transport. The particles of the medium do not move all the way; they move back and forth. It is the same way how a longitudinal wave propagates, hence sound waves are called longitudinal waves.
