Explain 4 blocks in modern periodic table.
Answers
THE FOUR BLOCKS ARE s,p,d and f
s-block:
THE s-BLOCK ELEMENTS. The s-block elements of the Periodic Table are those in which the last electron enters the outermost s-orbital. As the s-orbital can accommodate only two electrons, two groups (1 & 2) belong to the s-block of the Periodic Table.
p-block:
The p-block is the area of the periodic table containing columns 3A to column 8A (columns 13-18), not including helium. There are 35 p-block elements, all of which have valence electrons in the p orbital. The p-block elements are a very diverse group of elements with a wide range of properties.
d-block:
The d-block elements are found in groups 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, and 12 of the periodic table; d-block elements are also known as the transition metals. The d orbital is filled with the electronic shell “n-1.” Properties of Transition Metals.
f-block:
The f block elements are the lanthanides and actinides and are called the inner transition elements because of their placement in the periodic table due to their electron configurations. The f orbitals of the electron shell are filled with “n-2.” There is a maximum of fourteen electrons that can occupy the f orbitals.
The Periodic table is a tabular representation of the chemical element.
A collection of 118 elements is arranged in 4 blocks in the periodic table.
Explanation:
- The Modern periodic table is an array of elements organized on the basis of atomic number.
- These elements may be metals, nonmetals and metalloids
- Groups are numbered 1-18 in the periodic table.
- In periodic table rows and columns are found.
- The horizontal rows are in left to right are called Periods.
- The vertical columns from top to bottom are called Groups.
- The elements in the periodic table are divided into four block s,p,d and f.
- The name of the orbital which recieve the last electron is the name of the block.
- The elements in which the last valence electron enters into the s orbital so it is an s block element
- The same takes place with the p,d and f block elements
s block elements- The last electron enters in s orbitals, It can accommodate 2 electrons.
p block elements-The last electron enters in p orbitals, It can accommodate 6 electrons.
d block elements-The last electron enters in d orbitals, It can accommodate 10 electrons.
f block elements-The last electron enters in s orbitals, It can accommodate 14 electrons.
