• Due to ignorance of people, people do not follow the COVID guidelines and even if they have COVID, they do not restrict themselves and spread it further.
• People did not follow social distancing or wear masks or use sanitizers which further led to spread of deadly virus.
• Despite the recent increase of COVID-19 infections in Ethiopia, the general population and politicians at all levels exhibit a remarkable lack of awareness of preventive measures.
• The struggle to contain and control the pandemic is being complicated by this.
• We think that in order to promote a long-lasting COVID-19 preventive behaviour, the existing health communication strategy used by health authorities and media outlets needs to be revised. Therefore, the goal of this perspective paper is to spark conversations about efficient health communication strategies to encourage the general population to consistently follow COVID-19 preventive actions throughout time.  
• We held several meetings among the authors to combine different points of view into a "experts' perspective" that was informed by our everyday observations and our knowledge of the health service research.
