Answer:

It utilises the uncontrolled chain reaction of nuclear fission. To manufacture an atom bomb two pieces of fissile material are taken such that the size of each of them is less than the critical size but on joining them the size becomes greater than the critical size. When the bomb is to be exploded both the pieces are joined. Immediately the chain reaction begins. Due to the explosion of the bomb a temperature of the order of 107°C and pressure equal to millions of atmos- phere pressure is produced. Fatal ultraviolet rays, X-rays and y-rays are emitted. No sign of life is left upto several miles from the place of explosion. The emitted y-rays cause massacre.
