India is fortunate to have fairly rich and varied mineral resources, but these resources are unevenly distributed.

The distribution of minerals in India is discussed below:

  • Peninsular Plateau Peninsular rocks contain most of the reserves of coal, metallic minerals, mica non ferrous mineral and non-metallic minerals.
  • Gujarat and Assam Sedimentary rocks in Gujarat and Assam have most of the petroleum deposits.
  • Rajasthan It has reserves of many non-ferrous minerals.
  • Northern Plains There is very little or no economic minerals in vast alluvial plains of North India.
  • The economic activity of extraction of minerals from below the earth's surface is called mining.
