The epiglottis is a flap made of elastic cartilage covered with a mucous membrane, attached to the entrance of the larynx. It projects obliquely upwards behind the tongue and the hyoid bone, pointing dorsally. It stands open during breathing, allowing air into the larynx. During swallowing, it closes to prevent aspiration, forcing the swallowed liquids or food to go down the esophagus instead. It is thus the valve that diverts passage to either the trachea or the esophagus. MAY IT HELPS YOU

AIR PASSAGES:-

→ Basically, as we know, conducting part transports the atmospheric air into the alveoli, it clears it from foreign particles, humidifies and brings the air to body temperature.

• External nostrils → nasal passage → nasal chamber → nasopharynx → glottis → larynx → trachea → primary bronchi → secondary bronchi tertiary bronchi → bronchioles → bronchioles → terminal bronchioles respiratory bronchiole → alveolar duct.

→ Each terminal bronchiole gives rise to a number of very thin and vascularised alveoli.

→ A cartilaginous Larynx which is sound box, it helps in sound production.

→ During swallowing, epiglottis closes glottis to prevent entry of food into larynx.

→ Trachea, all bronchi and initial bronchioles are supported by incomplete cartilaginous half rings.
