An electric current is a flow of electric charge. In electric circuits this charge is often carried by moving electrons in a wire. It can also be carried by ions in an electrolyte, or by both ions andelectrons such as in an ionised gas (plasma). ... These conductionelectrons are the charge carriers in metal conductors.

Explanation:
When a positive charged object is placed near a conductor electrons are attracted the the object. Metals contain free moving delocalized electrons. When electric voltage is applied, an electric field within the metal triggers the movement of the electrons, making them shift from one end to another end of the conductor.
hope it helps
