India has 22.09% of its area covered with forests. Eastern India and central India has the majority. Based on the union territories, Andaman & nicobar has the most forests. Arunachal Pradesh has the most and Haryana has the least covered with with forests. Himalayan forest,Sundarban forest, Evergreen forests etc are some of the forests in India.

The types of forest prevailing in India are:
i) Tropical evergreen forests
ii) Tropical deciduous forests
iii) Thorn forests
iv) Mountain forests
v) Tidal forests
TROPICAL EVERGREEN
Occurs in place which receives more than 200 cm of rainfall.
Areas: The rainforests found in the slopes of Western Ghats, parts of West bengal & Orissa, North-eastern states, Andaman & Nicobar Islands.
The forests are very dense, evergreen & tall.
TROPICAL DECIDUOUS FORESTS
Occurs in places which receives 100-200 cm of rainfall.
Areas: Monsoon forests in the slope of Western ghats, north-eastern parts of Deccan Plateau, Northern plains & foothills of the Himalayas.
The trees shed leaves for 6-8 weeks in summer.
THORN FORESTS
Occurs in places with rainfall less than 100 cm.
Areas: Rajasthan, Punjab, Haryana, Madhya Pradesh, Deccan plateau.
The trees are short & widely scattered having long roots to take water from deep below the ground.
MOUNTAIN FORESTS
Occurs in places which have constant change in altitude.
Areas: Jammu & Kahmir, Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand & Sikkim.
Tropical deciduous forests are found in this region.
TIDAL FORESTS
Areas: Eastern coasts, large deltas formed by Ganga & Brahmaputra, Mahanadi, Godavari, Krishna & Kaveri.
They consists of mangrove trees which can survive in both freshwater & saltwater. These plants have breathing roots to help themselves survive.
