An indicator is a substance that changes its color in acidic and basic medium. An indicator shows one color in an acidic medium and different colors in a basic medium so that they are called indicators. There are different types of indicators: Indicators derived from natural sources are called natural indicators.

When we have to find the given substance is acidic or basic in nature, we have to make use of some other substances of indicators.
If we do not use the indicators and easily touch the substance, we can hurt our skin as some of the acids and bases are harmful to our skin. This might be very dangerous.
As a result, we use some special substances called as indicators. The indicator shows some change in it's colour when added to acidic or basic substances. By this method, we can find out the substances easily.
The indicators are generally available in the form of paper form in which we can easily dip it in substances and find out.
Litmus (indicator) :-
The litmus is extracted from an organism that grows on trees. This organism is known as lichens. The litmus at first, will always will be in the form of water and in the colour of mauve.
We convert the litmus fluid into litmus papers so that it can be easier to use. The litmus papers are generally available in two various ways namely red and blue litmus paper.
Red litmus paper changes it's colour to blue when it's added to basic substance. When, it's dipped in acidic substance, it remains red and can be reused.
Blue litmus paper changes it's colour to red when it's added to acidic substance. When, it's dipped in badic substance, it remains blue and can be reused.
