The Himalayan uplift and sinking of the Peninsular plateau created a large basin. This large basin was gradually filled with deposition of sediments by rivers flowing from the mountains in the north. A flat land of alluvial deposits turned into the fertile Northern plains of India. It was created by the interplay of the Indus, Ganga & Brahmaputra rivers. It spans an area of 7 lakh sq km and is about 2400 km long and 240-320 broad. It is a densely populated and intensely cultivated area. Equipped with a rich and fertile soil cover, adequate water supply and favourable climate makes it agriculturally a very productive part of India. It serves as the granary for India.
