The set of numbers used to describe the position and energy of the electron in an atom are called quantum numbers. There are four quantum numbers, namely, principal, azimuthal, magnetic and spin quantum numbers. The values of the conserved quantities of a quantum system are given by quantum numbers.

Quantum numbers may be defined as a set of 4 numbers with the help of which we can get complete information about all the electrons in an atom ,ie. location ,energy ,the type of Orbital occupied, space and orientation of that orbital. It tells the principal energy level or shell to which the electron belongs.
