Red soil is a type of soil that develops in a warm, temperate, moist climate having thin organic layer. The parent material is granite rock and the colour is red due to the presence of iron oxidewhich occurs as haematite and when it occurs in hydrated form it becomes limonite which is yellow in colour. The yellow colour of the soil is due to the presence of iron hydroxide.

The major texture of this soil is loam which is suited for agriculture. But red and yellow soils have low water holding capacity which are not suited for agriculture. Agriculture can be practiced in red and yellow soils with proper application of fertilizers and manures. As it has low water holding capacity, proper irrigation must be given.

Apart from these disadvantages, these soils brings more production with the help of fertilizers.

Major yield is obtained from these soils by growing crops like rice, sugar cane, wheat and pulses.

They are very well suited for dry farming.

They can produce excellent crops like cotton, jowar, linseed, fruits, millets and potatoes.

Red soils form the third largest group of soils in India.
