Explain about the Haversian system.

◆ Harvesian system -

  • Harvesian canal with concentrically arranged laminae around it is called harvesian system (aka osteon) of bone.
  • It is functional unit of compact bone.
  • Lamelle are the concentric rings around central canal.
  • Cavities containing bone cells are known as lacunae.
  • These are connected to each other by tiny canals called canaliculi.

Haversian system:

  • Haversian system named after the inventor Clopton Havers is also called as Osteons is an essential element of compact bone.
  • These systems are unevenly distributed with cylindrical structures having millimeters of length and 0.2 mm diameter as common characteristics.
  • There will be a circumferential lamellae near to compact bone in which the lamellae are arranged parallel to the surface.
  • Cavities contained bone cells are also called as lacunae. These systems are often found in Birds/mammals, and other amphibian species.
