Hitler was born in 1889 in Austria in an impoverished background. During the First World War, he enrolled for the army, acted as a messenger on the front, became a corporal and also earned medals for bravery. In 1919, he joined a small political group called the German Workers' Party. He took over the organisation and renamed it the National Socialist German Workers' Party or Nazi Party.
