People believe that the Earth acts a huge magnet and as a magnet it too has two poles. 
North and South Pole. 
even put compass works on this property of earth magnetic power. 
when we point the compass in any random direction it shows us the north direction. but in real the compass north is the geographic south. and the compass south is the geographic north. by geographic I meant the poles of the Earth.
