  • Erosion of top layer of soil caused by running water is called water erosion.
  • Water flowing down over a large area causes the topsoil to be washed away. This is called sheet erosion.
  • Gully erosion occurs by water flowing down through clayey soil that causes deep channels of water flowing down.
  • This causes land unfit for cultivation and is known as bad land. Such is the case in the Chambal Basin, where the gullies are known as ravines.

Explanation:

Water erosion is the detachment and removal of soil material by water. The process may be natural or accelerated by human activity. The rate of erosion may be very slow to very rapid, depending on the soil, the local landscape, and weather conditions. Water erosion wears away the earth's surface.
