Explanation:
318 of 528 wells show fall in water levels
Of the 528 wells analysed across Tamil Nadu, 60%, or 318 wells, had shown a fall in water level during monitoring by the Central Ground Water Board (CGWB), the Centre informed the Lok Sabha on Thursday. While so, three of the five wells analysed in neighbouring Puducherry had shown a rise in water level.
Replying to a query from MP Ramesh Chander Kaushik, Union Minister for Jal Shakti Gajendra Singh Shekhawat said groundwater levels in various parts of the country were declining due to various reasons like the rising demand for freshwater for various purposes, the vagaries of rainfall, rising population, industrialization and urbanization.
Trends in water levels
To assess the declining/rising trend in water levels on a long-term basis, pre-monsoon water level data for 2018 was compared with the decadal average (2008-2017) water level. The CGWB carries out groundwater monitoring four times a year in various States.
An analysis of the data indicated a decline in groundwater levels in about 52% of the wells being monitored, the Minister said, adding that States like Chandigarh, Delhi, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh, Jammu & Kashmir, Punjab, Tamil Nadu, Uttar Pradesh and Uttarakhand had witnessed a relatively larger depletion in the ji groundwater level.
“Water being a State subject, efforts to conserve and manage groundwater is primarily the States’ responsibility,” the Minister said. A number of States had done notable work in this area. Considering the importance of water conservation, the Prime Minister had recently written to all sarpanches in the country to ensure water conservation in a participatory manner, he added.
