Bending of pencil in water

Take a glass. Fill it with water and put a pencil in such a way that it is partly immersed and held obliquely to the surface. It appears to be bend at the point (at the upper surface of water level) where it enters water. It is due to refraction of light. The light ray coming from the immersed portion of pencil bends and moves away from the normal to the water surface. That is why the pencil partly immersed in water appears to be bent at the water surface.
