 \Large {\bf{\red{AGE \:COMPOSITION}}}

The age composition of population mean the total number of males and females in different age-groups in a country or in a region. In India, the population is generally categorised into the following three broad groups.

  1. Young: persons up to 15 years of age
  2. Adults: persons more than 15 years and up to 60 years of age.
  3. Old: persons above sixty years of age. age.

Note: The data for the age composition according to Census 2011 is not yet ready. Thus, the analysis is based on the data up to Census 2001.

The age composition is an important characteristic of population. With the help of age composition, we can calculate the needs and capacity of the population. It also influences the social and economic structure of the country.

Children up to the age of 15 years are fully dependent on their parents. This group is economically unproductive. The old people hence by and large become unproductive, though not fully dependents, These two groups are called the dependent population. The adults are the economically active population.

The ratio between the economically active and economically inactive components of population is called the dependency ratio. According to the 2001 Census, about 34.4 per cent of the total population is young and about 6.9 per cent is aged. In developed countries, the young do not constitute more than 25 per cent of the population.

In India, about 58.7 per cent of the total population are adults. They are productive, economically active and spatially most mobile. They support the population in other two groups. The dependency ratio in 2001 was 70.36. (41.3/58.7 x 100). This means that on an average 100 persons of working age group had to support 71 dependent persons.
