A sentence is said to be direct speech when the words of the speaker are reproduced exactly as they had been spoken.

When the words of the speaker are reported in one's own words, the sentence is in indirect or reported speech.

The past tense used in the reporting verbs said indicates that verb in direct speech has changed to the past tense in indirect speech.
