Figures of speech is an integral part of a language. It is used only in written text and oral literature. The phrase has a different literal meaning but is used for some other meaning.
Types of figures of speech:
Personification
- It ascribes human characteristics to inanimate or abstract objects. Example: My bike is a real beauty.
Metaphor
- It compares two different things which have something in common. Example: He is the star of industry.
Simile
- It compares two different things which have similar qualities. Example: He is as brave as a tiger.
Alliteration
- A Series of words in a sentence, in the beginning, will have the same consonant sound. Example: Boston baked beans.
Onomatopoeia
- It is used to express the sounds using imitating words. Example: My clock ticks loudly.
Hyperbole
- It consists of exaggeration words. Example: You are fabulous than the rainbow colors.
Euphemism
- It is the use of mild words instead of harsh or unpleasant words. Example: She is telling us a fairy tale.
Irony
- It is the usage of words that express the opposite meaning to the literal meaning. Example: You are so sweet as poison.
