It is the different forms of carbon found in Nature with distinct physical properties by some chemical properties.
- Allotropes of carbon has different physical properties as the arrangement of carbon atoms is different.
Some comman allotropes are:
Diamond :-
- In diamond, each carbon atoms is bonded to four other carbon atoms forming a rigid three dimensional figure.
Graphite :-
- In graphite each carbon atoms is bonded to three others carbon atoms in the same plane giving rise to hexagonal array. It is formed by arrays placed in layers one above the other.
Buckminsterfullerene :-
- This carbon allotrope is arranged in the shape of football. The first fullerene was C - 60. It was designed by US artitect Buckminster fullerene.
