water is amphoteric in nature as it makes the acid or base less in pH when water is added to it. When water is added to acid or base it is diluted to a pH nearer to 7.

water is amphoteric in nature because it act with acids as well as with base.
let us container an example, where water react with NH3 which is acid and with H2S which is base.

H2O + NH3 -------→ OH-. + NH4



H2O +H2S---------→H3O+ + HS-

self ionising of water takes place as follows..
H2O+H2O----→H3O+. +OH-
