1) Take some water in a glass.

2) Add few drops of red ink to the water.

3) Cut the stem of a herb plant from its base.

4) Put it in the glass.

5) It can be observed that some parts of the stem become red indicating that water is being conducted through the stem.

  1. Wash its roots properly and then cut the roots under water.
  2. Dip the lower end of the cut stem in a bottle containing water to which few drops of an indicator dye such as eosin or red ink has been added.
  3. Leave the plant undisturbed for few hours and then observe the plant carefully.
