Angular momentum can be defined as the vector product of the angular velocity of a particle and its moment of inertia.

When a particle of mass m shows linear momentum (p) at a position (r) then the angular momentum with respect to its original point O is defined as the product of linear momentum and the change in position.

                                                 

The term angular momentum applies to bodies which are in rotational motion. It measures the ability of a certain body to maintain its rotatory motion around a certain fixed axis. We generally express it numerically as the product of the body's mass (m), its velocity (v) and distance from the axis of rotation (r). This is given as

and like its linear analogue is always conserved. For example, we can imagine the Earth having a certain angular momentum as it rotates with a certain velocity and fixed mass around its rotation axis.

Thus, “If the total external torque acting on a system is zero, then angular momentum of the system remains constant.”
