In multicellular organisms, a group of similar cells with intercellular substances perform specific function, such an aggregation of cells is called tissue. Organs are functional group of many tissues. The study of tissue is known as histology. The study of tissues in connection with diseases of tissues is known as histopathology.

The word tissue is derived from a Latin word which means 'weave'. Cells that form tissues are woven together to form tissues. Tissues are sometimes held together by a sticky substance that coat the cells.
