This anomalous expansion of water is an abnormal property of waterwhereby it expands instead of contracting when the temperature goes from 4°C to 0°C, and it becomes less dense. The density becomes less as it freezes because molecules ofwater normally form open crystal structures when in solid form.

Answer:

  • Generally, the volume of substance increase on heating and increase in cooling.
  • but when water is heated from 0 degree Celsius to 4 degree Celsius ,its volume decrease and increase only after 4 degree Celsius.
  • this unusual behaviour of water from zero degree celsius to 4 degree celsius is known as anomalous expansion of water.
  • as density is inversely proportional to volume, so ,density of water increase from zero degree celsius to 4 degree Celsius .
  • at 4 degree Celsius , water has minimum volume and maximum density .
