1. The Russian Revolution of 1917 in which the Russian government passed into the hands of the communists
2. Russia had lost more than 6,00,000 soldiers
3. The new Bolshevik Party was not in favour of war. Russia withdrew from the war after the revolution and the Treaty of Brest-Litovsk was signed. Germany imposed a heavy war indemnity of six billion marks on Russia. She also occupied many prosperous and industrial cities of Russia

Broadly speaking, Russia pre-WW1 had an unfair and unpopular government. Russia entered WW1 due to (A) Russia's alliances with other regional Powers and (B) The Assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand.
From the point of view of the populace, WW1 was a monarch's imperialist war... in other words, monarchs were upset that a monarch was assassinated, and used it as an excuse to start wars used to extend terratory. The importance of this point of view was what was missing: the people of Russia felt that they were left out of the equation.
In Feb 1917, the Czar of Russia abdicated, and the Imperial Duma threw it's support behind a provisional Government. During this time, the Russian Army (which had, until ~spring 1917, been quite successful against the Austro-Hungarian Army) suffered significant losses from a German counter-offensive.
So WW1 was, militarily speaking, going well for Russia until Spring of 1917. From Spring 1917 until Late fall 1917, The Russian Army was suffering significant losses, and the Labor Groups (Imagine Worker Unions filled with military-age, conceivably draft-able men who are angry at the government) began forming the large Militia called the "Red Guard". In October 1917 (Nov. on Gregorian Calendar) the "Red Guard" , under the direction of Lenin, overthrew the provisional government and established their own.
Once the Red Guard and their newly-formed government had seized enough control, they signed the Treaty of Brest-Litovsk in March of 1918 to get Russia out of the WW1. However, the Russian Civil War between the "Red Guard", which by this point was called the Red Army, and the so-called "White Army" (the anti-communists, the monarchists, etc).
One could say that WW1 was the tipping point which resulted in Russia Transforming into the USSR.
