1. Head of the government, so he exercises real powers.
2. Coordinates the work of different ministries and departments.
3. Settles disputes-His decisions are final in case of conflict between ministries or departments.
4. He leads the cabinet.
5. He has the power to dismiss any minister from his cabinet.

Functions of prime minister -

• To form council of ministers.

• To preside over the meetings of the cabinet as well as council of ministers

• To act as a link between the president and the Cabinet.

• To co-ordinate the working of various departments.

• To advise the president about important appointments like that a Chairman of UPSC, Ambassadors .
