1. the british directly encouraged the production of commercial crops like jute, sugar, wheat and cotton.
2. in the early 19th century, the colonial state thought that forests were unproductive and considered them wild. so between 1880 and 1920, cultivated area rose by 6.7 million hectares.
3. by the early 19th century, pakka forests in England were disappearing. This created a problem to the Royal Navy to build ships.
4. also, good and strong wood was needed to make sleepers for the railways. this demand was completed by Indian forests.
5. large areas of natural forests were also cleared to make way for tea, coffee and rubber plantations to meet europe s growing need for these commodities.
