Explain any five social changes which took place in the life of the people in the industrial cities of eighteenth century England.

The development of city brought about the following changes in the social system:

a. City life was characterised by changes in the value system which came to be based on the ideals of individualism away from the communitarian way of living.
b. As private sphere came to be regarded as the realm of women, as public for men , gradually women moved by the spirit of individualism, freedom liberty organised themselves in various movements demanding recognition, right to work, right to employment and other civil and political rights.
c. The family over a period of time consisted of smaller units, with less family members away from a communitarian, joint family system towards independent  nuclear system.
d. Emotional bonding among the members reduced.
e. Traditional hierarchies began to break, industrialisation offered job opportunities to women.
f. Availability of domestic maids lessened the work load of women of upper and middle class.
g. The institution of marriage began to breakdown.
