(i) Kandla in Kuchchh was the first port developed soon after independence.
(ii) It was developed to reduce the volume of traffic on Mumbai port. 
(iii) It is a tidal port.
(iv) It caters to exports and imports of highly productive granary and industrialised states.

Kandla port was developed and constructed to reduce the pressure on the Mumbai Port as the Karachi Port has been given away to Pakistan after the partition.
Also this port exports and imports important productive granary agricultural and petroleum products from States like J&K Punjab Haryana Himachal Pradesh Rajasthan Gujarat etc.
