Causes of the French revolution :-

* Exercise of despotic power by King Louis XVI and collection of huge taxes by him in order to meet the expenses of his extravagant court .

* Unfair division of French society into three estates where the third estate faced lot of discrimination and inequality . It had to be the one to bear all the taxes and moreover it was given only one vote despite outnumbering the other two estates.

* Increasing population led to increase in the demand for foodgrains and bread ,which was their staple diet . Moreover, crops also failed due to harsh climatic conditions .This, in turn, led to enormous rise in the prices and the poor peasants found it difficult to buy food.
