1. In 1956, Sinhala was recognized as the only official language of Sri Lanka; thus disregarding Tamil.
2. the govt. followed preferential policies that favored sinhal applicants for university positions and govt. jobs. a new constitution stipulated that the state shall protect and foster Buddhism. a feeling of alienation was seen among Sri Lankan Tamils.
3. the Sri Lankan Tamils launched parties and struggles for the recognition of Tamil as the official language and it was denied by the Sinhala dominated government. these kinds of differences lead Sri Lanka in a state of civil war.

●All these government measures gradually increased the feeling of alienation among the Sri Lankan Tamils.
●They felt that none of the major political parties led by buddhist sinhala leaders was sensitive to their language and culture.
●They felt that constitution and government policies denied them equal social, political and cultural rights, discriminated them in getting jobs and seats in universities and ignored their interest.
●As a result the relations between tamils and sinhalas in Sri Lanka started straining and led to civil war.
