Till Aurangzeb Mugals were powerful but after the death of Aurangzeb , there were no powerful ruler which was able to continue Mugal Dynasty.

By that time Maratha were grewing powerful and extending their empire.
In 17th century Marathas were united by Shivaji and challenged Mughals in the South.

The Mughal Empire, which had reached its zenith during the rule of Shah Jahan and his son, beganto decline after the rule of Aurangzeb. In fact, the decline began during the last days of Aurangzeb.There were many causes for the downfall of this great dynasty.

1. None of Aurangzeb’s successors could give any stability to the empire. They were absolutely inefficient.

2. The nobles took advantage of this situation and they enriched and strengthened themselves.

3. Aurangzeb’s son Muajjan won the first round of succession war and sat on the throne under the name Bahadur Shah. He was very inefficient and after his death a quarrel took place among his four sons.
