In 1860's chawl were built in the native part of the town. These multi-storied structures were owned by private landlords.
1.A chawl was divided into several one room tenements. These had no private toilets.
2.Many families could live together in tenements.
3.High rents forced the tenants to share the other families. People kept the windows closed due to filthy gutters, buffalo stables etc.
