Three movements which tried to improve condition of women and lower:
1. Raja Ram Mohan Roy was the pioneer in starting the movement for Sati in the country. The movement resulted in the passing of the Bengal Sati Regulation of the Bengal Code. It was a regulation against the practice of widow immolation called ‘Sati’.
2. B.R. Ambedkar fought for the ‘rights of the Dalits’ and launched movements for the lower castes in India.
3. Jyotiba Phule and his ‘wife Savitri Bai’ were known activists and social reformers and they were the pioneers for the education of women in the country. He and his wife started a school for the girls.
Explanation:
- Raja Ram Mohan Roy was a social reformer and took an active part in the national movement for freedom in the country and also for the protection of women. He started the movement of removing the tradition of ‘Sati-pratha’ from the country.
- The women were forced to sacrifice themselves and join their dead husbands on the funeral pyre. Acharya Vinoba Bhave was a ‘freedom fighter’ and was well known for his fight for Independence.
- He had started the ‘Bhoodan Movement’ for the deprived classes and the ‘lower caste’ in the country.
- There were movements started by Dr. B.R. Ambedkar and Jyotiba Phule for the people of the lower castes and for the protection and education of women in the country.
