Earlier supply merchants had very often lived in weaving villages, and had a close relationship with the weavers. They looked after their supplies and helped them in times of crisis.
The new gomasthas were outsiders, with no long term social link with the village.
They acted arrogantly, marched into villages with sepoys and punished weavers for delays in supply by beating them.
Weavers lost their bargaining space for prices and couldnt sell it to different buyers.
The price they recieved from company was very low.

The weavers could not sell their cloth to other buyers because they had to sell to the company due to the loans they took from them.
