There are many ecological reasons for this, some of them are:
1. The building of dams requires a large amount of forest cover to be cut down.
2. As a dam require a large base and ground for the flow of water the people living around the area needs to be displaced.
3.The wildlife and aquatic life get affected
4. As the water behind the dam is still it allows growth of microorganisms which disturbs the ph of water.

Heya dear,
Here is your answer,
Well the three reasons for which the multi-purpose projects and large dams have come under great scrutiny and opposition in the recent years are :
1) ADVERSE EFFECT ON THE FERTILITY OF THE SOIL:
Due to the construction of dams, there are no annual floods in the river and because of this, the soil of the downstream region does not get nutrient rich. This decreases the fertility of the soil.
2) ADVERSE EFFECT ON AQUATIC LIFE:
Due to the construction of dams on the rivers, the fish in the downstream area do not get sufficient nutrient material. Also due to regulating and damming of rivers, affects the natural flow of water causing poor sediment flow downward and also resulting in rockier stream beds and poorer habitats for the rivers aquatic life.
(iii) DISPLACEMENT OF LOCAL COMMUNITIES:
The local people often have to give up their land and livelihood and their access and control over resources for the greater food of the nation.
Hope it helps you,
Thank you. :)
