The reasons or the rise of Directory in France:
1. In the first half of 1794, the new French Republic was convulsed in civil and foreign wars.
2. Robespierre, Louis Antoine de Saint - Just, Georges Couthon and many others were arrested and executed by the deputies in the National Convention .Their removal from power and the subsequent divergence of the Revolution's course is known as the Thermidorian Reaction.
3. There was a great demand for change which necessitated a reformation of the entire system of government. The original Constitution of Year I was replaced by a new document, the Constitution of the Year III. This dissolved the National Convention and established a unique new governmental system for France which had a bicameral legislature led by a five member executive.
The executive consisted of five directors chosen by the Ancients out of a list sent to them by the Five Hundred.
