Substantial parts of tribal belt in northeastern and central India, have been deforested or degraded by shifting cultivation.Large scale development projects have also contributed significantly to the loss of forests. River valley projects have also led to clearing and destruction of forests on a large scale. Mining is also an important factor behind deforestation.
