The following are the steps taken by the government to protect marginalised groups:

1. The government provides accommodation facilities to students belonging marginalized groups at a very low cost.

2. In order to give equal opportunities to the backward classes of marginalized groups, the government has passed the reservation policies, in education and jobs.

3. For admission in higher education, the government has set up different cut-off lists for marginalized groups. They are also given scholarships.

4. The government has passed various laws preventing employment of manual scavengers by these groups.

5. For their equal status in the society, the government of India passed the Scheduled Castes and the Scheduled Tribes Act of 1989
