Advantages of political competition:
a. Having political competition is in the very spirit of a democracy as it gives choices to the voters.
b. It compels political leadership to take up issues of national interest and to work in the welfare of people.
Disadvantages of political competition:
a. It may lead to polarisation of a society, may create groups and factions in a society creating disunity.
b. Political parties may resort to muscle and money power or may exploit social divisions like caste, religion so as to come to power.
However, in looking into these problems one cannot undermine the importance of having political competition which is the very essence of democracy as it :
a. It allows political parties in their competition for power to serve the people, to ensure their welfare.
b. Political competition allows political parties to represent diverse interests in the society.
c. It ensures that government is more accountable and responsive to the needs of the people.
d. It allows political parties to raise issues of national importance as desired by the people.
e. It gives choice to the voters.
