Pivot Joint : Joint where one bone moves in a ring of other bone. In this joint, a cylindrical bone rotates in a ring.

Example- The joint where our neck joins our head is a pivotal joint.

Ball and socket joint : Joint in which the round head of one bone fits into a cavity of the other bone. It allows rotation in a complete circle.

Example - Our shoulder and hip joints.

What is a joint?

\longmapsto The place where two or more bones connect is called a joint.

Types of joint:

  • Immovable joints

\longrightarrow They are fixed joints. They don't allow any movement of bones. In these joints bones are interlocked with one another.

Example : Bones of skull.

  • Slightly movable joints

\longrightarrow These joints are also called gliding joints.

Example : Joints of backbone, wrist.

  • Movable joints

\longrightarrow These joints allow the bones to move freely. They are also called synovial joints because they contain fluid called "synovial fluid" for smooth movement of bones.

They are also of three types:

  • Ball and socket joint
  • Pivot joint
  • Hinge joint
