According to Dalton's atomic theory, elements react with each other in the simple ratio of their atoms. Gay-Lussac proposed that gases combine in simple ratio of their volumes. In an attempt to correlate Dalton's atomic theory with Gay-Lussac law of gaseous volumes, Berzellius stated that under similar conditions of temperature and pressure, equal volumes of all gases contain the same number of atoms. It was incorrect.

Now, in 1811 Amedeo Avogadro solved the above problem by proposing two types of particles from which whole of the matter is composed of atoms and molecules.

So, he presented a hypothesis or law which known as Avogadro's hypothesis which can be stated as:

"Under similar conditions of temperature and pressure, equal volumes of all gases contain equal number of molecules".
